SEWANEE'S
MUSIC THEORY & COMPOSITION PROGRAM
OPPORTUNITIES
FELLOWSHIP IN THE ARTS
Students with exceptional promise in performing or studio arts can apply for Fellowship in the Arts. They are awarded to candidates with interests and accomplishments in visual studies, art history, film, dance, theatre, or music. Students selected for these fellowships will have the opportunity to dive more deeply into the life of the arts at Sewanee. Incoming students are invited to apply after they are admitted to Sewanee. These stackable fellowships, valued at $2,000, are renewable for four years.
COMPOSE FOR ENSEMBLES
The theory & composition program has partnered with the Sewanee Symphony Orchestra to premiere student compositions.
The program also collaborates with other visiting artists. Most recently with PUBLIQuartet, a GRAMMY nominated string quartet, and Hub New Music, based out of Boston, MA. To hear them play works written by students, please visit the Media page.
VISITING ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE
The University occasionally hosts visiting artists-in-residence who lead workshops, educate students about their work, and foster student musicianship.
Past Artists have included Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, and Rooftop Records, a world class barbershop quartet.
COLLABORATION WITH THE TENNESSEE WILLIAMS CENTER
The Tennessee William's Center (our theatre on campus) and the Theatre Department frequently collaborates with the Music Department and music students. Student musicians accompany productions or can even perform on stage. The departments share a few classes that combine elements of both disciplines.
WORK-STUDY AND INTERNSHIPS
The program has multiple paid work-study positions during the year. Paid internships and research positions are also available during the summer through the Sewanee Pledge.
STUDY ABROAD
Chances to study abroad are plentiful at Sewanee, and are available in the music department too! In the past, Dr. Rosenberg has taken groups to Indonesia to study Balinese gamelan music, and to Vienna to study music.
PRIVATE COMPOSITION LESSONS
Private lessons in theory and composition are available with the faculty. Lessons are available for 1 and 2 credit hours. Contact Dr. Rosenberg for more information.
COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY ART GALLERY
The University Art Gallery (UAG) and the Art Department collaborates with the Music Department and music students. Student musicians can partake in projects with student artists or even visiting artists. These opportunities allow students to experience the tradition of an overlap of art and music at the University of the South.
